The tomb of Shah Rukn-e-Alam

A tomb containing the remains of Shah Rukn-e-Alam can be found in Multan in Punjab, Pakistan. Sheikh Rukn-ud-Din Abul Fateh built this mausoleum in the 14th century when he was still alive. There are over 100,000 pilgrims who attend a celebration commemorating his death every year, making it one of the most impressive shrines in all of Asia.

The location of the event can be edited

Multan is one of the oldest cities in Pakistan and is located in the central part of the country. This tomb can be found on the northwestern edge of Multan Fort, located at the foot of the mountain.

The history of [edit]

The tomb was built between 1320 and 1324 CE in pre-Mughal architecture by Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq[3]. In addition to being the earliest example of Tughluq architecture, it is also one of the oldest monuments built during the Tughluq era.

When Ghiyath al-Din was governor of Dipalpur, he likely constructed the tomb for himself, before he became Emperor of Delhi Sultanate. The remains of Rukn-e-Alam were interred at the Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya in 1330. Rukn-e-Alam's descendants received the present tomb from Muhammad bin Tughluq.

Among the shrine's three entrances are one facing west, one facing south, and one with a vestibule typical of Suhrawadi tombs. By moving the main entrance to the east, the shrine should align its axis with Mecca.

Architect [edit]

The structure of the mausoleum is reminiscent of Tughluq military architecture, with buttresses at each of its eight corners.

The Khalid Walid Shrine near Kabirwala marked the beginning of Multani funerary architecture.

The Mausoleum's editing

There are decorative elements in museums[4].

The mausoleum has three levels. The second tier has an octagonal tier, which is common to Multan[1], but the first tier is in the shape of an octagon rather than resting on a square base like the nearby Shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya. The first is

The first tier's walls measure 15 metres across and are four feet thick. A similar tower supports each of the 8 corners of the octagonal first tier, and it narrows as it rises and exceeds the height of the structure.

A small dome rests upon the second octagon at each of the building's eight corners. There is a 15-metre dome on the third tier. This structure stands 35 meters tall and has sloping walls. A structure called an amalaka tops the dome of Hindu temples.

The elements of decoration [edit]

Red bricks bind black shisham wood beams together to form the mausoleum. There is carved wood on the exterior, brick carvings, a string course, and battlements on the exterior. There are buttresses, turrets, and crenellations on top of the shrine that reflect the influence of Tughluq architecture on non-military structures.

There are decorative tiles adorning the exterior of the building, which are adorned with floral, arabesque, geometric patterns, which contrast beautifully with the finely polished bricks of deep red, which accent the blue, white, and azure roof tiles. A border of blue tile-work decorates the lower part of the structure.

It is said that Shah Rukn-e-Alam's grave is surrounded by 72 other graves.

The interior should be edited

A shrine dedicated to Shah Rukn-e-Alam

The shrine has no internal buttresses nor external structural elements, resulting in a vast interior space. Mausoleum tiles were originally decorated with elaborate designs, but were later covered with plaster. The interior of the mausoleum is largely bare now.

One of the earliest examples of its genre is the carved wooden mihrab. The sarcophagus of Rukn-e-Alam lies slightly off-centered, surrounded by 72 graves of his relatives [4], alluding to the 72 martyred companions of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

Conservation of wildlife [edit]

Renovations and repairs were carried out on the mausoleum by the AQAF Department in the 1970s. Through updating the tiles and bricks made by Multan's Kashigars, the glittering glazed interior was achieved.
